Being Indian

Okay, a few days ago, I was using Quora, a question-and-answer app in which I found a few answers which were quite derogatory towards Indians. It was such that an Indian/ Russian had gone on a visit to a Russian dentist. They had been speaking on some silly topic and, finally, they reached the topic on India. This person had stayed there for several years before moving back to Russia. The conversation was such that :

DENTIST: You managed for several years in India???                                                                    VISITOR: Um… Yeah…                                                                                                                         DENTIST: I have heard rumors that the people there wash their *you know what*  with their left hands… Such nasty people… Also, how did you manage there??? Wasn’t the country very poor?? How did you buy even the basic needs?                                                     VISITOR: Well…..

And so went the conversation. So, let me tell you one thing. Even when India is climbing upwards in its social and economic status, people who are NOT Indians often find themselves ridiculing our country. They forget that it was us Indians who had invented the numerals, the decimal system and the concept of ‘0’ (zero).

We were in our full glory  before we were made slaves by the Britishers. Well, they introduced us to English, but, in the process destroyed our prized heritage of mother-tongue.

Foreign people don’t know that India had been long raised from its county-wide poverty. Also, nowadays, we don’t mostly use our hands to do anything. We do it the hands-free way.

So, all the people  around the world who ridicule India, know what you say before you speak… When I read that answer, I commented upon it gingerly saying that it was wrong. Humph… Why do people even think of us that way when we consist of more than half of the work-force in the country? This seriously must be taken up for a debate.
